NFL Boycott Diary: Week 1 — Champ Taps Out Over Kaep

I have been an avid fan of the sport of football since almost forever along with playing it on the high school and college levels and writing earnestly about it on platforms like the Redeye newspaper and this website.

People that know me can attest to my passion for watching NFL games and breaking them down. However this year, that has changed. Some things are much bigger than sports and entertainment.

The blatant blackballing of Colin Kaepernick due to his pre-game shows of protest for justice, equality and fair policing is so upsetting that I can no longer support the league. I’ve been disheartened by the amount of people in the league and in the media that seek to discredit his mission as disrespect to our military service men and women.

Kaepernick’s protest was to shed light on a system that has allowed police departments across our country to use excessive force and unjustly shoot and kill black people.

It angers me that other black men have allowed themselves to be used as pawns, pretending that they are above this — guys like Ray Lewis, Michael Vick and Daryl Strawberry have lost ALL of their credibility during this whole ordeal, but it shouldn’t be surprising to see these guys — each of long established questionable character — finding it difficult to do and say what’s right.

It’s important to recognize the hypocrisy of a league where convicted felons, rapists, women beaters and murder suspects get second chances, while Kaepernick has done nothing to jeopardize his first chance.

I have chosen to boycott because guys like Scott Tolzien, Josh McCown, Brian Hoyer, Brock Osweiler, Trevor Simien and Blake Bortles (all are employed by NFL teams, all — except Osweiler — took snaps in Week 1) ARE NOT BETTER THAN COLIN KAEPERNICK and are not inherently more deserving of a place in professional football than him.

Anybody who thinks otherwise is likely a racist idiot.
