We at WARR try to get around, but we can’t make it everywhere its poppin’ in the city. That’s why its good to have friends.
In particular, its good to have a friend in Willie “Rookie” White, the multi-hyphenate who’s blessed us with a couple features in the past and who stays on the grind as a photographer, videographer, blogger and MC in the group The Ol’ Days. Given Rookie’s love for A Tribe Called Quest there was no way he was gonna miss founding member Ali Shaheed Muhammad’s DJ set at East Room on Sunday.
Of course, Ali is riding high currently as his crew returned earlier this month with the amazing We Got It From Here, Thank You 4 Your Service, which hit No. 1 on the charts and solidified the Tribe as one of modern music’s greatest groups in the wake of the loss of fellow founder Phife Dawg earlier this year.
Far from resting on his legendary laurels, Ali still does cool things like scoring groundbreaking comic book adaptations and blessing audiences with his quiet but deadly skills behind the boards, built off decades of music study and innovation he’s made and shared with the likes of Q-Tip, J Dilla, Raphael Saddiq and Adrian Younge.
Retain all that for the next time Mr. Muhammad takes a trip to our town, as for now, Rookie got you. And if you wanna get Rookie, check out the funding page for his in-the-works documentary on violence in Chicago or take a listen to his FyeMan podcast, which comes out monthly and features WARR’s Editorial Director Kyle Means with the FyeMan Sports Report.
