You can love him or hate him, admit he’s lost his stinger or hold steadfast to the belief that he’s still the most dangerous predator in the NBA…no matter your position it’s clear that we all have only one more opportunity to see Kobe Bryant, the Black Mamba, in his natural habitat.
With Bryant’s last game of his two-decade career coming tonight against Utah, Nike — which doesn’t slouch on sending off its top signed talent in style — has fully annexed today as Mamba Day in tribute to arguably the defining professional basketball player of the post-Jordan era.
Its interesting, at one point Bryant was all out on his lonesome repping the three stripes — though long jilted, Adidas is still giving salute to its former signature endorser this week as well — but since jumping over to the Jumpman brand in the early 2000s, Kobe has solidified his place at home in the Jordan lineage of Nike basketball spokesman, likely selling many more millions of shoes than if he stayed pat and allowing for Phil Knight’s minions to fully play up his long overdue farewell as only they can.
Thirty-four Nike athletes, including fellow basketball luminaries LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Elena Delle Donne pay their respects in the Mamba Day video, which you can see above (ed. note – no longer on YouTube), alongside Bryant’s coach and mentor Phil Jackson.
Beyond the YouTube honor, Nike also has developed a Mamba Day generator where fans can upload photos and later share them on social media as well as its unveiling of the Kobe 11 Mamba Day iD shoe, which fans can customize online beginning at tipoff of tonight’s game.
