Our man Champ, co-founder of Weareregalradio.com, is providing special Chicago Bears-related columns for the RedEye newspaper this season, appearing online every Thursday and in the print edition each Friday.
This week — the Bears are entering the final three weeks of a season that at times showed promise but wound up settling into the kind of disappointment that fans of this franchise are all-too familiar with.
But in the NFL today’s sub-.500 team can be tomorrow’s powerhouse, its the way it works in a League which awards the highest draft picks for the teams with the most losses and matches up last-place teams with other last-place teams in future schedules.
So, while there’s a never-setting sunset off in the horizon, the Bears still have to make a way to occupy their time productively — and what better way to do that then to make the teams they play as frustrated and disillusioned as they are!
This week with Minnesota, an NFC wild card contender, the Bears have their final chance to deliver a mortal blow to a playoff-hungry team, one that in many ways leapfrogged the Bears in the prosperity bread line that is the NFL’s Wild Card Weekend.
Beyond the spoiler possibilities, Champ also makes sure to note that this week and the following two could offer precious final chances to see certain Bears who’ve possibly overstayed their welcome, like a certain maligned placekicker named Robbie:
Gould’s latest failures have made him the scapegoat for the team’s recent losses. As his once surefooted accuracy has gone by the wayside, his $4.1 million price tag (as in his salary cap hit) for the 2016 season may mean his days in Chicago are numbered. A talent deficit to overcome at multiple positions makes it hard to justify paying that kind of money to an underperforming kicker.
