Bears: Joe “Champ” Tanksley Takes On Color Purple As Minnesota Comes Calling

Our man Champ, co-founder of, is providing special Chicago Bears-related columns for the RedEye newspaper this season, appearing online every Thursday and in the print edition each Friday.

This week — the Bears are back in action after a week off and they’re not only back in the thick of NFC North division play, they’re in the thick of it period as the team’s now-reliably porous defense prepares to face Adrian Peterson and the Minnesota Vikings.

Now, this version of the one called “All Day” seems to be quicker with the switch nowadays than he is quick to bounce off-tackle into open space, but he’s still a dangerous proposition for the Bears, even the threat of the former 2,000-yard rusher could help open up things for several other young and athletic Vikes including flashy rookie wide receiver Stefon Diggs and multi-faceted QB Teddy Bridgewater, who looks more and more comfortable as the man for Minny. About Bridgewater, Champ says:

“The young quarterback had a career day last week. It will be up to Pernell McPhee and the Bears defensive line to rattle him. Cornerback Kyle Fuller and the rest of the secondary have to step up as well and keep tabs on receiver Stefon Diggs, who has emerged as one of Bridgewater’s favorite targets.”
