Bears: Joe “Champ” Tanksley Tells, Sells Another Good Game

Our man Champ, co-founder of, is providing special Chicago Bears-related columns for the RedEye newspaper this season, appearing online every Thursday and in the print edition each Friday.

This week — the game is normally to be sold, not to be told, but Champ can’t help but to provide a few direct points that the suddenly-winning Bears can use to extend their surprising winning streak this week at Detroit.

Of course, it should be said that the Bears’ may not even need to focus on the four talking points Champ offers given the miserable way 0-5 Detroit has started this season, but its awful hard to go 0-16 in the NFL (though the Lions do know something about it) and, plus, the normal levels of hate imbued in this NFC North rivalry can cause all sorts of things to happen. Ask yourself, are you really ready to put all your faith back into the Monsters of the Midway?

It’ll certainly help if the Bears hit this game-plan point, as laid out by Champ:

2. Get takeaways

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has thrown eight interceptions already this season, and their running back Ameer Abdullah can’t hold onto the rock … FUMBLE! Who said there wasn’t such thing as a free lunch?

If you don’t know, Joe has experience playing the game both in the Chicago Catholic League (St. Rita) and in college (Butler).
