Listen to the new D’Angelo (and the Vanguard) album, Black Messiah as it appears on Spotify. The long-awaited follow-up for the soul titan’s 2000 masterwork, Voodoo, is a stunning work in its own right and stands a chance to re-set soul music in that difficult place where it is most magical — somewhere both very familiar and far enough ahead to seem out of grasp.
Michael Archer‘s travails and travels in between Voodoo and Black Messiah inform every note as does his many influences, from Prince and Sly Stone to George Clinton and J Dilla. Put on top of all that his natural inclination to make panties drop and a timely hint of social deconstruction — in which the almighty D urges his listeners to get in touch with their inner messiahs — and you have an album that stands to mean a lot of things to a lot of people from here on out.
After you smooth out to the new stuff, take a hit of the newest Regal Selector, featuring many of the one-offs, remixes and live performances that helped satiate D’Angelo’s fervent fan base in the decade and a half it took for his resurrection.
