El-P warned us and like the unexpected release from a unidentified drone, the sequel to one of 2013’s best rap releases dropped this morning and true indeed, its one of 2014’s best.
With fuller sound, darker lyrics and almost no let-up over its 11 tracks, the former Def Jux founder and his homie from Atlanta, Killer Mike, made Run the Jewels 2 arguably an even more winning exploration of the most twisted areas of the rap psyche, looking out on an ever-broken world where those most resourceful and unrelenting in their corruption can survive, but nevertheless our heroes survive because of their complete unwillingness to be what they so often refer to as “fuck-boys.”
And that’s exactly who this type of music is designed to repel, its marketed as such as well — for free, even on iTunes, the music crept out while most were sleeping — days earlier than its scheduled Oct. 27 street date — but Jamie and Mike were cool enough to thank those who have previously downloaded their music and subscribed to their e-mails with a message not too much later:
AW FUCK IT. WE CAN’T WAIT ANY LONGER.
RUN THE JEWELS AND MASS APPEAL RECORDS ARE PROUD TO PRESENT TO YOU: #RTJ2
We just couldn’t wait another damn day longer to share RTJ2 with you.
Thank you to all the jewel runners worldwide for all your support. It means everything to us. Please enjoy the music. It was made for you.
No problem, it was our pleasure, and it continues to be.
