As it turns out, the return of the Gangsta will make its way to Chicago this summer.
This morning saw the announcement of Lollapalooza’s full 2014 lineup, this year’s edition taking place during the weekend of August 1-3 at Grant Park. If you can make your way back up the festival’s epic poster you’ll see OutKast at the top as one of Lolla’s three headliners.
The reformed duo of Andre 3000 and Big Boi have peaked music lovers’ interest since the beginning of the year with the announcement of their reunion and its subsequent tour. Since then they have periodically trickled out the dates they plan to do this year, including a spot at Milwaukee’s Summerfest on the night of June 29. Beyond the Milwaukee date other stops so far include Drake’s OVO Fest in Toronto in August, New York’s Governor’s Ball and the always-notable Coachella in California, which kicks off this year’s run of performances next month.
In spite of the city hosting the biggest festival of the summer, there was reason to worry if OutKast would actually make a stop in Chicago upon the announcement of the Summerfest gig. It’s been reported that Lollapalooza, since setting up shop in Chicago, has preferred not to headline acts that also headline near-by festivals the same summer. Two acts (Weezer, Wilco) have previously headlined both festivals in one year and now OutKast joins them.
Eminem joins OutKast as a headliner, helping to maybe make this the most promising Lolla in regards to hip-hop since the days the festival still traveled throughout the country. Also performing during the festival will be Nas (who will perform the same night as Outkast), Childish Gambino and Chicago representers Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa, among others. Tickets are now available online, and if you haven’t attended Lolla before know that tickets are mad expensive, even for single days.
Summerfest, which bills itself as “The World’s Largest Music Festival,” is a much more affordable option to see OutKast, whose show you have to purchase separately from the main festival in its Marcus Amphitheater. Today, Summerfest also announced the headliners for its 11 ground stages, available through the main entrance.
Nas, B.O.B. and Ludacris will be among the rap headliners. Single day tickets for Summerfest are as low as $9 on weekdays, three-day passes are $42.
